While I support and believe in the validity of that core argument, it is my counter that the field of live adult entertainment—specifically, that of burlesque—provides a space and an opportunity for women (and men) to challenge the norms of gender and sexuality. By manipulating norms and pushing against the boundaries of idealized forms of beauty and gender with parody, burlesque dancers evoke a space of agency both for themselves and for their audience.
